When it comes to sightseeing in Beppu, visiting hells is a given. There are many unique hells or natural onsen in the city, and today I will introduce Kamado Jigoku. Kamado Jigoku is a great place to enjoy six different kinds of hells, as well as gourmet food such as jigoku or hell-steamed pudding made with soy sauce and century eggs.

Kamado Jigoku is located in Kannawa, a historic hot spring resort area.
Pictured above is the entrance to Kamado Jigoku. Similar to other hells in Beppu, the entrance fee is 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students. It was Tanabata season when I visited, so the Tanabata decorations were very colorful.
Kamado Jigoku is said to be one of the sacred places of the popular manga, Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer), and even has a certificate of recognition. The bronze statue in the museum is reminiscent of the scene in the final episode of the manga, and there are various rumors about it. There is also a service where you can have your picture taken in a Demon Slayer costume, which should be fun for fans.
As mentioned earlier, this is a luxurious hell where you can enjoy six different kinds of hells. Each one is called Kamado Jigoku 1-chome, 2-chome, and so on up to 6-chome. At the end, there is a store where you can buy souvenirs, and next to the shop, there is a blue footbath just like in Umi-Jigoku!
At the store, you can also enjoy soy sauce pudding and century eggs made using the steam of the hot spring.
The soy sauce pudding is 350 yen each. Its moist texture and rich flavor make it very satisfying. The sweetness is a bit subdued, and the soy sauce flavor is exquisite.
And then there was the pidan, a kind of century egg like that found in Chinese cuisine. This pidan is steamed by one of the Kamado Jigoku hells, so it’s browner than regular hell-steamed eggs and has a slightly smoky flavor. It was served with a little salt and some yuzu-kosho soy sauce on the table.
In addition to pidan and soy sauce pudding, the store offers a variety of sweets and snacks such as Red Devil soft ice cream and green tea pudding, all of which are perfect for a short break.
Kamado Jigoku was a very fun hell with an amusement park feel. It’s a hands-on experience, so both children and adults can enjoy it. It’s a must-see for fans of Demon Slayer!!
